Adversarius Shadow of the Rose Book 1 edition by Melissa Chesley Literature Fiction eBooks

Two kingdoms. Two goals. The race of a lifetime.
The neighboring kingdoms, Paridzule and Relavia, have been at war for over five hundred years. An accidental alliance is about to be formed when Kayta, daughter to the King of Paridzule, becomes secretly engaged to Alabassin, heir to the Relavian throne.
Peace does not come without sacrifice, or challenges. Alabassin's father soon discovers his son's treason, and is more determined to prevent that alliance from forming. No matter the consequences.
When Kayta and her brother, Hedric, disappear, the world assumes the worst. Their sister threatens to abdicate, leaving Paridzule exposed, and vulnerable with no ruler.
Now, an unlikely, rag-tag group must align to make sure Relavia's king does not invade Paridzule, taking the first step in what could become total domination.

Not bad fundamental story/character. But for my tastes there wasn't sufficient concentration of narrative, ie, the various characters all had narratives going while they were alone, giving the reader an omniscient perspective. That can be done well, but I felt that it distracted the story and kept me from identifying more with the characters.minor spoiler alert... it seems like one of the major characters was pretty much unconscious or nearly so throughout the whole book. It was part of the plot, but it really prevented me from developing an interest in the character.
Over all, I'd suggest dropping the leindren narrative line and reducing the number of characters in the ...err 'adventuring group' to about half what it is... too many characters, and not enough about any one of them. My impression is that Rose and Nightshadow are intended to be more of the 'main' characters, but there was enough about the various extraneous characters that it really blunted the connection. Oh yeah.. pirate (err pyrate) lady looked like a character that was going to be developed, and then pretty much dropped.
Maybe it just needs to be reorganized so that we follow fewer characters, but more consistently?
That's just my opinion.

Adversarius Shadow of the Rose Book 1 edition by Melissa Chesley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Got it yesterday could not put it down. Book is smooth and is kept moving along well.
Characters are well written and seem to come alive.
Good world building but the characters are a bit sketchier, not fully fleshed out and I probably won't continue with the series.
Adversarius is a gripping story that you can't put down. I was intrigued with the cross of supernatural (ogres, vampires, and such with assassins and pyrates (with a "Y"). The characters are intriguing, and this book leaves you hanging at the end, demanding more! For a debut novel, I'm highly impressed, and can only see Mel Chesley rising higher with her talent. A definite recommendation for Sci-Fi lovers. And Rose- Please give us plenty more of this guy. I love him. Shadow will just have to move over! ;)

The world of Adversarius is an intricate one. I don't generally read high fantasy (I generally lean toward a lighter fare), so at times it was harder for me to follow along than it would be for someone who cut their eye teeth on Tolkien. But I still kept up. Harder doesn't exactly mean hard or impossible. And, yes, because I know you're wondering, I DID identify with the assassin more than any other character.
All of that said, and I'd give this book four or 5 stars because of what I loved, I'm going to talk about what I didn't like so much. Here's where my bias comes in because I'm more willing to forgive because she's my sis and because this is her first book. I'm also more willing to blame her editors and proofers than the writer herself. Some of the wording was flawed. Words were used out of place or the wrong words were used (affect vs. effect comes to mind). These are things that a good editor will catch. Mel's languages were wonderful. I loved that aspect of her writing. Her prose flows well and is engaging. Her character dialogue is smart, sassy, and snappy. I liked that a lot. And the flaws were minor enough that, after the first few chapters, I could let it go and enjoy the book.
Love, love, love this book. HATE that I have to wait for the next one!
Adversarius is a grand adventure to restore Princess Kayta's memory. An unlikely group of warriors, assassins and a priest combine to get Kayta home.
I thought this was well written with characters that intrigue and are likable despite their profession. Among the warriors is a half ogre. His red eyes set him apart from the others along with a heavy accent. I would have liked a little more description about his appearance since I associate ogre's with rather ugly creatures and clearly this one is not ugly. I would have also liked a little more character building with Kayta and her betrothed, Alabassin. I liked Alabassin and wanted him to play a more active role in this book.
The plot is solid. The villain is Alabassin's father and he is inhumane in so many ways. The author left this a cliff hanger which I didn't like. Many publishers are asking writer's to do that these days so we will be seeing more of this. I do hope the sequel is released soon. All in all, good job, it's worth a read.
I liked the story and the characters are likable and engaging. It does read a bit like a role-playing session; what with a party forming to get the rescued princess home, etc. Etc. Not too bad.
But...Not perfect either.
However, there are some things that could be better. The writing is a little too loose, which makes it seem a bit sloppy. The author is good with general grammar, she has a handle on things like using the appropriate word in the appropriate place (The kind of thing that drives me crazy with other authors.), still some work tightening up the prose would improve things. The language itself is simple, not in a bad thing in itself, the author does, perhaps, sacrifice style by using it. The addition of greater detail and description would improve readability and not leave the readers wondering the hows and whys. A bit more character development and and world-building would also improve things.

But for my tastes there wasn't sufficient concentration of narrative, ie, the various characters all had narratives going while they were alone, giving the reader an omniscient perspective.
